The importance of play for children

The Children’s Play Policy Forum have produced a report indicating that play boosts children’s happiness and development. Language development, problem solving, risk assessment and independent learning skills are all benefits gained by play. The study found that school playgrounds were one of the best ways to increase a child’s physical activity levels, with free play resulting in more activity than structured PE lessons. Improvement in academic skills, attitudes and behaviour, improved social skills and improved relations between other ethnic groups were other areas highlighted as positives. Full BBC article.
