Able readers failing school phonic test

The Department of Education insists that the best way to teach reading is with phonics and wants all English primary school children to learn to read using the phonics method. However, a researcher from Durham University, Andrew Davis, claims that those already starting to read will be put off.  The phonics method encourages the reader to spell the word out using sounds, rather than recognising the whole word and reading for meaning. The government part funds books approved as meeting its criteria.
